Goan Football in Muscat.

On a touch and go trip to Oman I read thru the local newpapers and
chanced upon an article of a Goan Football Tournament scheduled for the
second week of September 1998.

The Organising committee of the Independence Cup'97 has come together to
organise the first "Goan Soccer League 1998". This tournament is to be
played on the Full size Oman Club Grounds and the round robin draw will
enable the teams to score points. Winners will be decided on point
tally. Every game will have a "Man of the match" prize too.

If any Oman resident could possible get the scores and post other Indian
or Goan events.....please do.

Being an avid sports lover, I'll try and schedule a business trip to
co-incide with the Tournament....thus mixing business with pleasure.

I will be visiting Doha next week and will try and get updates on
Indian/Goan happenings there too.

Best regards,
Lianne

Rajiv Gandhi Awards In Kuwait

This is in reference to Rajiv Gandhi Awards for excellence to 5
Indians in Kuwait who have contributed significantly to the all
round socio-economic-cultural-educational enrichment of the Indian
community in Kuwait. The award ceremony will be held on 29th. of
this month. Sonia Gandhi will attend the function and hand over
the awards to the selected recipients. I hope these awards will
go only to the deserving Indians if at all they are really existing
in Kuwait. I only hope that these awards will not go to those so
called social workers and self proclaimed guardians of Indians who
fled from Kuwait immediately following the invasion of Kuwait to
save their skins. I only hope that none of the awards will go to
those who as reported bribed and enplaned with Gujral. I only
pray to God to give wisdom to the selection committee members to
enlighten their sense of judgment to select the worthy Indians and
not those who are known to harass Indians working under them for the sake of
few hundreds dinars per month. I hope that none of the awards
will be given to those Indian businessmen who exploit their fellow
Indians in their organizations. I only hope that none of these awards
will go to any of the top professionals who shows total dislike for
ordinary Indians and act like arrogant Maharajas. I only hope that
none of the awards will go to any of the Indians who created and
supported nurses problems. I only pray that none of the awards
will go to any of the so called top Indians who supported one South
African couple to illegally take possession of one 9 year Indian boy.
It is my wish that none of the awards to go to the so called educationist
who in the name of promotion of education among Indians loot and suck the
blood of teachers and others who are doing their job properly. I hope
none of the leaders of Indian organizations who run their organizations
as money making rackets will be given any of the awards. I hope none of the
Indians who were applauding from India the invasion of Kuwait will be
bestowed with any of the awards. I only hope the prize awarded Indians
will not turn out to be big jokers in the eyes of community and
chamchas of the organizers or vice versa. I hope none among the
selectors will have a member with questionable integrity either on
his job or business or in private life. I hope the organizers will
have no ulterior motive behind inviting Sonia Gandhi to Kuwait.
I welcome Sonia Gandhi to Kuwait and wish her a very comfortable
stay also request her as an opposition leader to take little interest
of the well being of Indians especially from those who are supposed
to take care of Indians.

New Konkani Album Released by ROSARY FERNS in Kuwait.

Renowned Goan melodious singer, very good composer of Konkani
songs, playwright and director Rosary Ferns hailing from
Colva Goa and presently employed in Kuwait since last so many
years released his 7th Konkani Audio Cassette “ KHAST DEVACHI “
on 20th of August 1998, in Kuwait City in the presence of some of
the elite Konkani lover Goans. The Cassette was released by yet
another Colvakar and well known Goan figure Alexander Menino
Fernandes who had great record of doing excellent work for the
cause of Konkani as a Jnt. Secretary of Novem Goem Pratishthan
Kuwait Somiti. NGPKS was the branch of Novem Goem Pratishthan -
A Trust - formed in Goa in 1979 to collect funds for establishing
2 Konkani Dailies - one in Roman Script and the other in Devanagri.
During those days Alexandre M. Fernandes has played an excellent
role in creating Konkani awakening among the Kuwait Goans. His
love for Konkani and Goa has no limit for this reason he is stuck
up to Goa as much as Goa stuck up to him. During his brief speech
as a Chief Guest he depicted full picture of Rosary Ferns whom he
knew since birth and later on as a young boy in Colva organising
Konkani dramas and other extra curricular activities. Then Alexandre
elaborated the role of Rosary's father the late Jose Luis Fernandes
who himself was a noted playwright and director in whose dramas
Alexander sang songs along with Rosary's eldest brother Rosario
who regretfully expired at an very early age. Alexander also
highlighted the important role the late father of Rosary played
in Colva as an educationist in establishing the first English School
which was finally gifted to the Church and now housed in a palatial
building next to the Church under the name Infant Jesus High School.
As a Guest of Honour, Fr. Gabriel, resident priest of local Catholic
Church highlighted some of the salient features of Rosary's songs and
dramas and showered fabulous praises on Rosary for doing yeomen services
in the service of Goa and its language Konkani. Fr. Gabriel will go down
in the history of Goan priests in Kuwait as the greatest protagonist of
Konkani and Goan cause. A simple priest of simple habits but with high
ideals and top intellectual capacity which are rare in many of the Goan
priests always on the fore to support any Konkani cause be it among Goans,
Mangaloreans or any other Konkani community. A very generous priest and helpful
he always supports Konkani cause in Kuwait and also Konkani people. In Kuwait Fr.
Gabriel looks after the spiritual and other htmlects of Konkani speaking
Catholics, he is a solace to many of the depressed Konkani speaking people
mainly the Goans. Rosary Ferns as a producer and composer of all the songs
in his short speech appreciated the efforts and cooperation of all the
singers and musicians for making this cassette a reality. The proceedings
of the function were compered by A. Veronica Fernandes.

The Album Khast Devachi comprises 10 songs and 2 jokes by ace comedians
Agostinho Temudo and Sally. Among the songs 2 are beautiful Mandos one
by Rosary Ferns and the other by Felcy. The other singers are Prince Jacob,
Jr. Rod, Lucian Dias, Josephine and Lawry & Jenny. The musical score was
rendered by Agnelo Dias.

To create the atmosphere lively and entertaining, special music was
arranged under the leadership of veteran and old timer Goan Mr. Santan
Carvalho (Raia) who dazzled the gathering by playing some of the beautiful
oldies on his Violin and he was ably supported by yet well known 2 gigantic
musicians Francis Machado (Taleigao) on Gumot and Aggie Dias (St. Estevaum)
on Guitar - both were formerly of Kala Academy Goa - with an additional
back-up by Mario Rebello (St. Inez) on yet another Goan Gumot. Well known
Konkani singers F. X. Pereira (Cortalim) and Francis de Verna also
entertained the gathering by singing a beautiful duo on
"Free Kuwait Forever" while producer of the Cassette Rosary Ferns sang
on minus track music one of his cassetted songs which received lot of
appreciation. Finally the function concluded with singing of Mandos and
Dulpods in which everyone participated thus bringing back nostalgic feelings.

TAIL PIECE:

Regretfully, 12 hours after releasing of his Cassette, Rosary Ferns
suffered greatest loss of his life and laborious efforts of many years
when his residence got gutted turning into inferno and thereby destroying
all his valuables in the fire that razed in his company's residential camp.
In this fire all his priceless items such as all his master cassettes, minus
track cassettes, all his drama and song books turned into ashes. Luckily he
was out of his camp when the fire took place but when he returned he was
stunned to see all the above mentioned converting into ashes including all
his clothes and other precious items.

This cassette is already in the market in Goa and Kuwait besides it
should be available in other parts of Gulf. However, elsewhere in the
World, if anybody is interested in having this cassette, kindly contact
the producer Rosary Ferns - C/o this writer by giving full postal address.
