                     Xmas [n. KRIS-mus / EKS-mus]

This abbreviation for the word Christmas is often viewed as a modern
commercial shorthand,  but  has actually been in use for hundreds of
years in religious writing.

Xmas makes use of an old abbreviation for Christ.  His name in Greek
begins with the letter chi,  which looks like an X, and his name has
long been abbreviated as X.  Using the same shorthand, the word Xmas
was recorded in print as early as 1555.

What is the correct way to say the word_   The  similar abbreviation
Xtian  (for Christian) is pronounced  [KRIS-chun],  so  Xmas  should
correctly be  pronounced  [KRIS-mus].  But today,  X is more readily
seen as a detached letter, or as a mathematical term, so most people
pronounce Xmas [EKS-mus].

                A  Y E A R  I N  R E V I E W
                      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It is that time again when we all look back at the year 1998 and
think about what we have accomplished.  All  of us set our goals
for 1998 way back in 1997, whether they were related to business,
family or  other interests.  We must now look at those goals and
say to ourselves, "Did we accomplish them_".
I'm almost  certain that  we did not reach ALL of our goals. Why
not_ Was it because those goals were unrealistic_ Did we somehow
lose interest in reaching those goals_ Whatever the reason being,
we must understand  these  reasons in order to set goals for the
coming year.
I had set many goals for 1998,but I quickly learned that some of
them were  unrealistic  because of my inexperience. And there is
nothing wrong with not reaching a goal as long as you tried. One
thing about life is that no  matter how much you try to plan the
way you want it to go, something always happens to mess it up. I
think  this  is true for everyone.  The important thing to learn
from developing a  path is  to get back on course once something
deviates you from it. This requires focus.
In a demanding lifestyle that most of us live,focus is something
that is hard to keep. Most of us dread getting up in the morning,
rushing  to get ready for work and  then fighting traffic to get
there. Some of us quickly come home, flip on the computer to see
how many orders we received from  customers or how are affiliate
programs  are  doing, hoping one day  that  the  money  will  be
enough that we  can quit work and work on the business the whole
day. The thought of going to bed late and sleeping  in  everyday
is motivation enough.
The goal  for most people is self-employment. Being able to call
your own shots and decide your own hours. If you want to be able
to do this, you have  to put in  the  effort. Start writing down
your goals as a first step to achieving your dreams.
In  setting  your  goals  for 1998, you  first  must  make  them
realistic.  You  should also create a constant reminder of those
goals such as a picture in a mirror, whether it is of your dream
car or dream house.Lastly, you should never give up in trying to
achieve  your goals and always  keep focused. Wayne Gretzky once
said "100% of the shots you don't make will never go in".
Good  luck  to  all of you in 1999.  May it bring great success!
                   S P E C I A L   P E O P L E   -  A Poem
     The special people in this world
     are the most precious
     and the most appreciated people of all.
     No matter what happens,
     they always seem to understand.
     They go a million miles out of their way.
     They hold your hand.
     They bring you smiles,
     when a smile is exactly what you need.
     They listen
     and they hear what is said
     in the spaces between the words.
     They care,
     and they let you know
     you're in their prayers.
     Special people
     always know the perfect thing to do.
     They can make your whole day
     just by saying something
     that no one else could have said.
     Sometimes you feel like
     they share with you a secret language
     that others can't tune into.
     Special people
     can guide you,
     inspire you,
     comfort you,
     and light up your life with laughter.
     Special people
     understand your moods and nurture your needs,
     and they lovingly know
     just what you're after.
     When your feelings come from deep inside
     and the need to be spoken to someone;
     you don't have to
     hide from,
     you share them...
     with special people.
     When good news comes,
     special people
     are the first ones you turn to,
     and when feelings overflow
     and tears need to fall,
     special people
     help you through it all.
     Special people
     bring sunlight into your life.
     They warm your world with their presence,
     whether they are far away or close by your side.
     Special people
     are gifts that bring happiness,
     and treasures that money can't buy.
                { PRESS RELEASE FROM G.W.S. - KUWAIT }
It is a happy augury that on the eve of CHRISTMAS 98,  by  destiny
of fate, the portals of justice opened wide,pouring abounding joys
into the lives of the anguished family of Mrs. Maria N. Fernandes,
who has been languishing in a comatose state since the tragic road
accident,  which has been much talked about, that  occurred on the
ill-fated day of Christmas 1996.  She is continuing to receive the
best of attention and treatment at her residence at Verna-Goa, and
her condition is said to be improving, as per the reports received
from her family members lately.
The impartial trial has come to a conclusive end and the judgement
passed in favour  of the said victim Mrs. Maria Ninette Fernandes,
who has been awarded a compensation amounting to KD. 14,000/- odd,
equivalent to approx. 2 million Indian Rupees.  All  this has been
made possible, thanks to the selfless efforts of  Mr.  Alex Wilson
Coelho, President of Goan Welfare Society - Kuwait,  who unmindful
of the critics, tirelessly performed his duty, as the one and only
one of the anguished family, chosen by the renowned social worker,
Mrs. Inez Cotta Carvalho, who  is  the  bonafide protector of  the
family. Had it not been for his persuasive efforts, in fulfillment
of  the  commitments given to  the  anguished family, things could
have been different.
It is  a  matter of  great joy  and  rejoicing  that  justice  has
prevailed despite all odds.  Let  us  on  this auspicious occasion
of CHRISTMAS solemnly commit ourselves to serve  the  needy to the
best of our abilities.
Goa-World Team congratulates SFX GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL at Mapusa for
winning the CSI-GoaCom prize for the best IT implementation for
schools in Goa.
The  following  is  the  report forwarded  by Frederick Noronha:
Congratulations to SFX GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL at  Mapusa for  winning
the  CSI-GoaCom  prize  for the best IT (information technology)
implementation for schools in Goa. Kudos to the Computer Society
of India-Goa branch for  taking a keen interest in adjudging the
schools nominated, taking trouble to visit  all of them, and for
doing a thorough job.   GoaNetter Dave Futers' should be a proud
man today... all his efforts  in helping the  Mapusa school have
borne fruit.....
*****************************************************************
Some suggestions that emerged from the GoaNetters meet held
        on December 28, 1998 at Hotel Solmar, Panjim:
* Detailed  survey to be launched shortly to check out GoaNetters'
preferences & tastes,that will subsequently help to decide policy.
Eddie Fernandes working on the same.
* Shorter  postings  suggested.  Maximum  limit  to  be fixed for
postings to GoaNet (excepting news). Marlon Menezes to implement.
* Efforts be made to get more members to GoaNet.
* Bid  to  encourage 'silent' GoaNetters to  participate  in  the
discussions.
* Regular  Opinion  Polls  could  be held to check out opinion of
various netters on different subjects.
* GoaNetters  be  asked  to  opt  whether they'd like their email
addresses made public, or not released publicly.  List  of  those
who agree to have their names made public to be made accessible to
GoaNetters, so as to help foster links among those netters wanting
it.
* A 'hospitality list' of  GoaNetters  in various cities/countries
be built up.This would help other GoaNetters contact those situated
locally when travelling, etc.  GoaNetters could volunteer:
  (i) hospitality
 (ii) local assistance and information; or
(iii) general pre-visit information.
* GoaNet should be a forum strictly meant for Goa-related postings.
Postings  not  related  to  Goa  should  not  be permitted, it was
suggested.
********************************************************************
                       Strengths of GoaNet:
Below  is a list of what GoaNetters say they value most about this
mailing-list,  or suggestions of  what they could use the list for:
* News from and about Goa.
* Campaigns
* Projects / initiatives (eg Computers In Schools)
* Discussions
* Building links with Goans, and people interested
  in Goa, worldwide.
* Getting assistance for members' needs (eg getting
  help in new cities, making friends, etc...)
*********************************************************************
          Highlights of the GoaNet Meet at Hotel Solmar:
* Mel D'Souza,  an illustrator  and  writer  for  the  Newfoundland
'DownHomer' magazine, gave an interesting brief presentation on his
work to illustrate Goa and its heritage. Saligaokars would find his
depiction of villagers' family-names, and local landmarks,
particularly fascinating.  (He has given us copies which we hope to
put up on the Internet shortly.)
* After a round of introductions, there was a brainstorming session
on what we could discuss.
* Peter DeSouza (Colvale/US) spoke of how public service advertising
campaigns could help build awareness over issues of importance here.
E.g.,  promoting Internet usage, or the plague of accidents/malaria.
* Lira Fernandes suggested  that a list be maintained and updated of
various groups working on different issues in the state
(e.g. tackling the plastics menace, or keeping Goa clean).
* Jorge Abreu Noronha of Lisbon, Portugal, briefed about the Casa de
Goa activities in Portugal.
* Boogie Viegas gave an update on the Internet in Goa.
* Marlon  Menezes  spoke  about  plans  by the GenX mailing list to
sponsor a scholarship in Goa.It was suggested that instead of having
just another  scholarship,  the  money  could  be used to promote a
suitable contest in association with  bodies like  those of science
teachers or math teachers here.
* Fredrick Noronha put together a list  of various initiatives (both
successful,unsucessful and yet-to-fructify) undertaken by GoaNetters,
to make the  point that this forum has  had some useful fallouts for
Goa too.
* Emmanuel listed  what  all  the  Computers -In- School project had
attained in the last year.
* Peter suggested building a profile of the membership  -- where do
they come from,  how many,  what's the male-female ratio,  and  the
attrition-rate (of people leaving).
* After a real Goan lunch (the menu was cosmopolitan, but it really
took time to arrive on the table) another round of discussions were
held on the shape of GoaNet that we would like to have. Some points
are highlighted above.
* Later, in the evening, the CSI-GoaCom Award was presented, amidst
reports of how the  Computers In Schools project is faring. (EOM)
             "zzzz" ....... Bill Gates at it Again!
In my life, when I read comics, I thought the "zzzz" in those little
balloons indicated someone was sleeping!  Boy,  did I miss the boat,
and  it took me all these years to figure it out!  All  that  wasted
time!  With  the help of Bill Gates, I have, indeed, seen the light.
Now, I finally know what all those "sleeping" people in those comics
had on their minds!
If you want to  see what I'm babbling about, start up Microsoft Word,
type in "zzzz"(without the quotes, of course) & hit the spell check.
Now you too can be enlightened!
REMEMBER it has to be 4 letters of z.  Try using the thesaurus too..
     BISHOP LUMEN MONTEIRO VISITS KUWAIT FOR THE GOLDEN JUBILLE
         CELEBRATIONS OF OUR LADY OF ARABIA CHURCH - AHMADI
The Roman Catholic Church in Kuwait this year marked the Golden Jubilee
of the establishment of Ahmadi Church.  This was the first Church built
in Kuwait 50 years back under the stewardship of the then Bishop
Stella.
To  mark  this  great  event of the  Golden Jubilee, this year a lot of
activities have been conducted at the Ahmadi Church  (Ahmadi  is a name
of the locality closer to Kuwait Oil Company sector).
The Pronuncio of this area based in Lebanon visited Kuwait to take part
in this Golden  Jubilee Church  activities.
The  other  important  Church  guest who was in Kuwait was Bishop Lumen
Monteiro, Bishop of Agartala - India.
Hailing from Goa, Bishop Lumen Monteiro was born in Africa  and brought
up at Calangute, Bardez.  Studied at St. Joseph's  High  School, Arpora
- the first English High School of Goa and following  the motto of that
School  of  "Cibaria - Necessaria - Sumite - Et - Abite",  Bishop Lumen
Monteiro departed for Bangalore &elsewhere for further priestly studies.
Then he went to USA for studies and Rome as well from where he obtained
his doctorate and later on ordained  as  Bishop  and posted at Agartala,
the newly established  diocese there in northern India.  His mission is
very stiff in a very rigid  surrounding and atmosphere. But knowing him
from early age & being  his close friend and colleague for 7 long years
at Arpora, sitting on the same bench  as students and many times riding
the cycle together to go to School, I can rightly say that Bishop Lumen
Monteiro is  very capable person to  face the challenges of life. I can
still remember with some nostalgic feelings of  how we both used to eat
"Chonne & Kapam"   and  crack  jokes  and  have fun during the
interval.
>From the early age he was the brightest student, scoring  highest marks
in number of subjects  with ease.   Encouraging his other classmates to
study hard,helping his classmates in studies especially the weaker ones
was his forte.  A  very amicable  and jovial throughout  his scholastic
career, he always loved to help others.   Humility has been his another
hallmark, lack of pride was his great asset & to serve humanity was his
main motto.  These qualities then won him lot of laurels in the School.
Even the then great giant of Goan education &  principal of that School
Fr. Mendonca used to admire him for his intelligence.
While admiring Bishop Lumen Monteiro for his excellent qualities I must
also admit that his parents  were  also very good  practicing Catholics
who inculcated in their 4  children -three brothers and one sister very
best qualities matching  with  Christian  morality and doctrine.  It is
a pity that they are no more  to see  their  son reaching to this level
of Church hierarchy.  May God  Bless  Bishop  Lumen  Monteiro  to serve
not only Catholic Church but also to serve the humanity.
                 ASTHMA IN CHILDHOOD  -  Dr. Jose Colaco
Asthma is a condition in which there is narrowing of the airway.  It is
one of the commonest causes of illness &  hospitalization in childhood.
Not surprising  therefore  that Asthma is one of the most common causes
of children missing school.
Over  the  past several years, the incidence and severity of asthma has
increased quite significantly.Yet asthma remains a very under diagnosed
illness of childhood.  Doctors  and  mothers  all over the world appear
reluctant to accept the asthma label & seek refuge under diagnoses like
wheezy bronchitis, asthmatic bronchitis or a touch of  bronchitis.  The
earlier the  parents know about the diagnosis, the easier the long term
management  of the child will be.
Among  the set-up factors of asthma are:  a family history of asthma or
allergy, the introduction of cow's milk formula & cereal to the child's
diet  before the age of six months.  Therefore, the best way to prevent
severe asthma  developing in a child born to a family with a history of
asthma,  is  to breast  feed  the  child  and delay the introduction of
cereals  until the age of 6 months.
There are several factors  which trigger off an attack of asthma.  They
include viruses,  exercise,  temperature  changes, smoke,  dust, pollen
and strong perfumes,  pet  and food allergies.  There are variations in
the reactions of different children to different triggering factors-and
sometimes to the same triggering factors at different times.
Once  the  diagnosis  of  asthma  is made, parents usually want to know
"What next_".  This  is  the discussion  phase  where  parents  and the
paediatrician normally have a prolonged chat about asthma & its manage-
ment.
Among the medications likely to be used are ATROVENT, VENTOLIN, BEROTEC,
PULMICORT, AZMACORT and  Prednisone.
It is good to discuss  individual therapy with your personal physician.
Many parents ask if their child would ever outgrow asthma.Most children
grow up to be asthma free adolescents and adults;  but some do not.  In
any event,  it  is important  that the triggering factors be avoided at
all times,if possible. An attack of  asthma can be provoked at any age.
The availability of newer drugs like SINGULAIR and ACCOLATE  adds a new
and exciting dimension to the prevention of Asthma. Even so, the  usual
methods of reducing the triggers for asthma should be utilized. Some of
these methods are: keep the house as dust free as possible, allow
fresh air into the bedrooms, replace the feather pillows with polyester
ones, discard furry toys, avoid smoke,  perfumes,  foods preserved with
sulfites & foods the child is allergic to.It is also important to clear
stuffy noses, have  sufficient clothing to  protect against temperature
changes & take prophylactic medications as advised. Long term follow up
includes pulmonary function testing.
