SUPPORT FOR HARASSED
CHRISTIANS IN INDIA VOICED
AT THE PRAYER CUM
SOLIDARITY MEETING IN KUWAIT:
_________________________________________________________
In an extra ordinary show of solidarity with
the persecuted
Christians in India, under the supervision
of His Lordship,
Monsignor Francis Michallef O.C.D., The
Bishop of Catholic
Church in the State of Kuwait, a prayer-cum-solidarity
meeting
was organized on 4th February 1999 in the big Church Hall in down-town
Kuwait City.
The meeting started exactly in time at 7.30 pm was well attended
by the capacity crowd of different Christian denominations,
nationalities, different religions -majority of which were
Indians from various States.
Johnny Fernandes and his wife Rhonda, Albino Fernandes,
Luis
Rodrigues, Fidelis Fernandes, Joseph Soeiro,
Leo Fernandes,
Salvador Pereira, John Santan Fernandes, Elvino Rodrigues
and
his wife Annie, Anthony Veronica Fernandes, and others, who left
no stone unturned for organizing this meeting and its success.
Special mention of appreciation must go to His Lordship, the
Bishop of the State of Kuwait for giving the green signal to
go ahead
with organizing this meet in the Church Hall, which
was
an appropriate venue.
At the inaugural address His Lordship in His highly philosophical speech
with the mixture of liturgical expressions dwelt on the
importance of
religious tolerance and human brotherhood. Touching
on the views of Pope John Paul II in Vatican.
His Lordship stressed on the importance of peaceful co-existence
among all the communities.
His Lordship strongly expressed His grief and sadness over
the
religious persecution perpetrated in the
name of religious
affiliations. While concluding, His Lordship invoked God's Grace
to enlighten people of all faiths to live in peace and
harmony
for the good of humanity as a whole.
The presence of the Ambassador of India to the State of Kuwait,
His Excellency, Shri Prabhu Dayal, was an added impetus of this
prayer-cum-solidarity meet. The Ambassador was welcomed with
a
rapturous applause and who captured the hearts of all the
attendees. It was his first visit to the Church premises and he
expressed his appreciation!
In his 15 minutes speech and as the head of Indian community in
Kuwait,he deplored the harassment and killings of Christians in India.
Citing an example of his own. Brought up in Allahabad in
the Christian School with good education, discipline and
morality, His Excellency stated that during his scholastic career
in Protestant Missionary School, he was never induced
by the
missionaries to convert to Christianity. To prove his closeness
with Christians and remembering the daily assembly prayer
at his Alma Mater, he recited openly the Christian prayer given
by Lord Jesus Christ "Our Father". The very recitation of this
prayer so "clear" and "profound" surprised and caught the entire
audience's amazement.
A rapture of applause vibrated the "Hall" at the end of the
prayer. He assured the Christian community of full protection
from the Government of India, the President, the Prime Minister
and the relevant authorities who have all condemned the brutal
attack
on innocent and peace loving Christians and promised that necessary
action will taken to book the miscreants.
He elaborated the contribution of Christian community in the
educational, development and welfare of India, and cited the name
of Indian Minister, George Fernandes who being a Christian is
holding
the defence portfolio of India. Mr. Fernandes is also
the member of the principal committee established to investigate
in the Harrasment and Killings of Christians.
Further elaborating on this subject, His Excellency said
that
Christians need not fear of Hindus who in overwhelming majority
do not subscribe to the views and actions of few "miscreants"
who are indulging in anti-Christian activities and violence.
While concluding, he quoted Jesus Christ's last words from the
Cross:
"Forgive them Father, for they know not what they are doing".
V.K. Vohra, an eminent personality and a long time resident in
Kuwait while professing his Hindu faith deplored in unequivocal
terms the persecution directed on Christians. Having witnessed
the experience of religious persecution while fleeing from
(present) Pakistan to (present) India during the India's
partition movement and the Hindu Muslims riots, Mr. Vohra said
the people who create disorder in the name of their religious
following
are lunatics. He further stated that he prayed in
Christian Churches and at Mount Mary Church at Bandra, Mumbai
and he received all the favours. He found that this
did not
enticed him to be converted to
Christianity though he is
still a believer in Christian faith as he believes in all other
religions. Religions, he said are different routes leading to
the same destination but to fight against one another's
religions is something irreligious which he deplored.
During his involvement with the Kuwait Indian Football
Federation, he acknowledged the enormous help he received from
the members, overwhelming majority of whom are Christians.
A group of Carmel School students rendered a song
composed
by first Indian Nobel Laureate, Rabindranath Tagore titled
"Prayer to India".
Sister Bernita, Principal of Carmel School and also a recipient
of the Rajiv Gandhi Award for Excellence in 1998
in the educational
field, highlighted in her serene but mellifluous
voice the important
role Christians have played in India. Citing
the example of Mother Theresa, Sister Bernita described how much
Christians have done for the development and upliftment
of the
down-trodden members of the society irrespective
of caste and
creed. She also stressed on striving for peace, love and harmony
while deploring the cold blooded killings of Australian
pastor
and his two budding sons in Orissa.
Fr. Daniel, one of the parish priests of the Holy Family Cathedral
Church in Kuwait read out a passage from the Holy Bible
-
"Sermon on the Mount". This passage was very much
liked by
Mahatma Gandhi, and which created lot of changes in his life.
Mrs. Rhonda Fernandes read out a beautiful passage selected
from the Autobiography of Mahatma Gandhi.
Anthony Veronica Fernandes gave his speech touching on various htmlects
of Christians legacy of peace, love and tolerance as
well as fighting for India's independence even from European
soil. He categorily stated that all involved in the harassment
and killings should be brought to justice, and justice should
prevail
so that the Christians in India feel secure and safe.
A well-known figure in the Church circle, Albino Fernandes,
compered
the proceedings. Mrs. Rhonda Fernandes proposed a
vote of thanks; and the meeting was concluded with the recital
of Indian National Anthem.

BRIEFS ON GOA'S POLITICAL HISTORY
Central Rule....
PRESIDENT'S RULE IN GOA: Goa came under Central rule with President
K R
Narayanan issuing a proclamation under Article 356 dissolving the State
Assembly and ending political uncertainty following the resignation
of
Luizinho Faleiro government ahead of a confidence vote on Feb 8.
Repitition of the same....
TIME & AGAIN: This is the fourth time that Goa comes under Central
rule.
For the first time it was on December 3, 1966 after the first post-
liberation government led by MGP's Dayanand Bandodkar resigned to pave
the way for an Opinion poll. The Central rule was lifted on April 1,
1967.
The second spell began on April 28, 1979, after Shashikala Kakodkar's
MGP
government was defeated. It lasted till January 16, 1980. Another brief
spell of President's rule was between Dec 3, 1990 and January 25, 1991,
when Luis Proto Barbosa's PDF government collapsed, and the Goa Assembly
was kept under suspended animation.
Solving the Imbroglio.....
LAUGHING STOCK: Former CM Wilfred de Souza said that President's rule
will
solve the present imbroglio in Goa. De Souza said that he was happy
not to
have succeeded in forming a new government with the help of the BJP
as he
would have becoming a laughing stock if the BJP had with-drawn support
a
few days after the new government was formed. (NT)
Feeling sorry.... for ....
"I FEEL SORRY": Having said and done everything possible to come to
power
and retain/lose it, politicians get away with their strange behaviour.
The outgoing Chief Minister Luizinho Faleiro said that defections and
counter-defections witnessed by Goa in the last seven months have lowered
the image and prestige of the State and Goans. "Whatever has happened
is
a disgrace and I feel sorry for it," Faleiro says.
Out of Greed.....
MANAGING GREEDY MLAS: CM Luizinho Faleiro said, "My MLAs were not happy
with the portfolios given to them, the corporations awarded to them,
the
committees on which they were appointed and some wanted to be included
in
the Cabinet." (H)
Scoring high.......at "ministerial" title donning....
31 OUT OF 40, EXCELLENT INDEED: The outgoing Goa Assembly leaves behind
a "record" of ex-ministers. Since 1994 till date, as many as 31 MLAs
in
the 40-member House became ministers at least once. Had the last bout
of
power struggle succeeded the remaining nine too would have donned the
dubious title. The 1989 Assembly set the record of producing seven
chief
ministers in five years. In 1994, the record was "improved" with three
chief ministers in less than one year. (NT)

SALIGAO CIVIL & CONSUMER CELL (SCCC)
- A example to follow!
"If you are not working towards the solution, then you are part of the
problem".
This is what you will be told if you are in Saligao and only
talk but
refuse to fight for you trampled consumer rights.
And fight you must. Cooking Gas (LPG), Rations, Transport, Telephones,
Electricity, Garbage are only some of the many consumer problems
that
caused havoc in our village. Fight or be consumed!
Till December 1996, Saligaokars did not fight. They
bore everything
meekly, suffered in silence, and then the LPG problem got out of hand.
For ten years the local dealer in the village had held the consumer
to
ransom with his arrogance powered by the lakhs he was minting.
From blackmarketing on the coastal hotel belt, to depriving consumers
of the free home delivery they were entitled to, he indulged in every
malpractice in the book.
When enough was enough, a group of concerned Saligaokars got together
and with the guidance of Goa Desc - an experienced activist resource
centre in Mapusa - they decided to do something. A public meeting was
called and an irate gathering of over 200 consumers gathered
at the
Lourdes Convent, and The Saligao Civic & Consumer Cell (SSCC) was
born.
Since that historic December 8th, the LPG dealer is a different
man.
He still black markets cylinders to hotels on the
coast. He still
harasses consumers. But not the Saligao consumer. Saligao gets
their
cooking gas on time and delivered at home!
Weekly vigilance visits to the dealer by the LPG sub-committee of the
Cell, ensure that consumsers rights are protected. Eternal vigilance
is the constant price. The Cell is slowly but surely discovering this.
Similar watchdog vigilance is being maintained over
the Telephone,
Electricity and Ration ( Public Distribution System )
Departments.
Success rates vary, but consumer presence and pressure is maintained.
The SCCC does three main things - Vigilance, Education and Redressal
guidance. It attempts to 'empower' the consumer who otherwise is weak
& alone against a monster who is protected by the Police,
Government
and Industry.
The Cell tries to keep a watchdog vigilance on the functioning of the
different departments in the village. And when redressal of grievences
is needed, it guides and sometimes helps the consumer get justice.
General Body monthly meetings - open to the public - are
held every
second Sunday of the month from 11.00 am to
1.00 pm. The previous
month's successes and failures are reported and evaluated and
future
action plans discussed. A 15 member Executive Committee meets
during
the month as needed.
The SCCC is a voluntary, non-funded, secular outfit, not
affiliated
to any political party and will soon be a Registered Society.
It is
a good example of a grassroot village group, struggling with the
everyday problems of living in Goa. It succeeds. It fails. Sometimes
it fails more than it succeeds.
But the important thing, with little initiatives
like this one and
with all people's movements is that the *struggle goes on!*.

Joke of the Week
A magician was working on a cruise ship in the Caribbean. There was
only
one problem. The captain's parrot began to understand how
the magician
did every trick and started shouting in the middle of the show:
"Look, it's not the same hat"
"Look, he is hiding the flowers under the table"
"Hey, why are all the cards the Ace of Spades _"
The magician was furious but couldn't do anything; it was, after all,
the captain's parrot.
One day the ship had an accident and sank. The magician found himself
on
a piece of wood in the middle of the ocean with the parrot,
of course.
They stared at each other with hate, but did not utter a word. This
went
on for a day and another and another.
After a week the parrot said: "OK, I give up. Where's the boat_".

Yesterday a butterfly
came floating gently through the
sky.
He soared up through the atmosphere
then drifted close enough to hear.
I said, "I'd love to fly with you
and sail around the way you do.
It looks like it would be such
fun
to fly up toward the summer sun.
But I have not your graceful charm.
I haven't wings, just these two
arms.
I've been designed to walk around.
My human feet must touch the ground.
Then magically he spoke to me
and told me what his wish would
be.
He said, "What I'd love most to
do
is walk upon God's Earth with
you,
to squish it's mud between my
toes
or touch my finger to my nose.
I'd love just once to walk around
with human feet to touch the ground,
but I have not two legs that swing,
I haven't arms, just these two
wings."
And so we went our separate ways
in wonder and surprise.
For we'd both seen God's precious
gifts
through someone else's eyes.

LOVE ADDS A LITTLE CHOCOLATE
A house is a house - until love comes through the door,
that is.
And love intuitively goes around sprinkling that special
brand of angel dust that transforms a house into a very
special home for very special people - your family.
Money, of course, can build a charming house, but only love
can furnish it with a feeling of home.
Duty can pack an adequate sack lunch, but love may decide to
enclose a little love note inside.
Money can provide a television set, but love controls it and
cares enough to say no and take the guff that comes with it.
Obligation can cook a meal, but love embellishes the table
with a potted ivy trailing around slender candles.
Duty writes many letters, but love adds a joke or a picture
or a fresh stick of gum inside.
Compulsion keeps a sparkling house. But love and prayer stand
a better chance of producing a happy family.
Duty gets offended quickly if it isn't appreciated, but love
learns to laugh a lot and to work for the sheer joy of doing it.
Obligation can pour a glass of milk, but quite often, love adds
a little chocolate.
