Begin now to gather entertainment items which your family and you can use
if electricity  is lost or if some entertainment services are lost.  Find
board games, collect  paper  and  craft and sewing projects, keep glue and
tape on hand, and collect books for all ages.  Buy a notebook for each
family member so they can record their thoughts  and  feelings if there is
an interruption
in services. Have a "convenience free" night  once  a month to introduce
the idea to your family so they will be more comfortable with doing without
T.V., radio, VCRs, electronic games, etc.
You may even find that  these  special  nights are so fun that they become
a regular in your routine!

I put  up  an  "Easter Tree".   I start looking for some  fallen  branch or
uprooted bush (it's different every year),  about  a  month  before Easter.
I get it home somehow (it's always too big to easily fit in my little car...
but I push and shove and leave windows open etc) and put it in a pot filled
with dirt. I cover the dirt with that green Easter grass.  Then we decorate
the tree with some store bought Easter decorations and those pretty
plastic  eggs (I prefer the pastel ones...my son wants the bright colored).
I poked a hole in the top of each egg and tied a pretty ribbon through each
and that makes the "hanger" for the eggs.  There are  also some commercial
lights shaped like eggs that we string on this poor "barren" tree.
Obviously, you can pack all this away each year and reuse it the next.

Now here's the good part...
Each "Good Friday" I write my prayer requests out to God and tuck them away
into an egg (This will be the first year that I help my son do the same....
oh...that brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it!!!) We hang those
eggs back on the tree (making sure to know which ones they are).
After my  son  goes  to bed "Easter Eve" I get busy putting "blooms" on the
tree. I take multi colored crepe paper cut into squares and twist it in the
middle and then just tape them on to the end of the branches.  I take curly
ribbon and just hang it from the tree.

Easter morning  Clay finds the tree in "full bloom" and presents underneath
the tree (just a few......practical things...new socks...new spring
jacket....books and one way cool toy...etc)
After breakfast and  church  we look  for  and find the egg that holds LAST
YEAR'S prayer request....open it up, read it and discover and share how God
has answered our prayers!!!

God's Blessing this Holiday season!

           Easter Special ------------    B i r d 's   N e s t s

Ingredients:
1 bag peanut butter chips (10 oz.)
1 TBSP. solid shortening
1 large can (5oz.) thin chow mein noodles
1 bag pastel colored peanut candy

Method:
Melt entire bag of chips and 1 tbsp. of shortening slowly in microwave or
in  double  boiler  on stove top.  If using microwave, heat full power in
intervals of 30 seconds at a  time and  then less as chips begin to melt.
You want the chips and shortening to  be well blended and creamy and hot.
DO NOT OVERCOOK!!!

Immediately pour the can of chow mein noodles into the peanut butter
mixture and toss lightly to coat noodles.
Avoid crunching noodles. Using a spatula can help. Do this quickly, making
sure the noodles are evenly coated.

Drop by spoonfuls onto WAX PAPER and gently form into the shape
of a nest, leaving a hollowed area in the center in which you immediately
place three peanut candies or jelly beans for the "birds eggs".

Helps to have two people! Each batch makes approximately 14 nests.

                        H O T   C R O S S  B U N S

1 lb all purpose flour, 1 tsp salt
1 1/2-oz compressed yeast (1 pkg. active dry yeast or quick rise)
1 cup warm milk, 2 oz butter, 1/4 cup sugar, 1 egg,
1/2 cup sultanas (related to seedless grapes, commonly known as golden
raisins)
1/2 cup currants (similar to above, found in the same section of the grocery)
1/2 tehtmlns mixed spice, 1/2 tspns cinnamon

M E T H O D
1. Mix  yeast with 1 tehtmloos of flour and sugar and mix into the warm milk
Stand  it  in  a  warm  place  for  15 minutes until the mixture is spongy.
2. Sift flour salt and spices into a large bowl
3. Rub in butter, add sugar and fruit.
4. In a small bowl beat egg well and add to yeast mixture.  Add this to the
rest of the flour and knead into a soft dough.
5. Cover with greased plastic wrap and stand in warm place for about 40
minutes, or until the mixture has doubled in size (make sure it is out of a
draught).
6. Turn  onto a lightly floured board and knead well, turning outside edges
into the centre.  Knead until smooth and elastic.
7. Cut into 15 - 16 even sized pieces and knead each one into a round shape.
8. Place onto a greased lamington tray 11"x7" (jellyroll pan)
9. Set aside in a warm place 10-15 minutes and make a paste for the crosses

P A S T E
1/2 cup plain flour, 1/3 cup water
10.Mix together to form a very soft paste and place in an icing bag.
11.  Pipe crosses on each bun.
12. Bake in hot oven 15-20 minutes
13. Remove from oven and brush with glaze while hot.

G L A Z E
1 tablespoon sugar,  1 tehtmloon gelatin (Powdered),   1 Tablespoon hot water
13.Dissolve sugar and gelatin in hot water.  Use while hot.
14. Cool on a wire rack

It sounds like a lot of work, but its not really.  It is the waiting for the
yeast to rise that is the hardest. Because the buns have the spices they will
be a brown colour but the cross will be white and stand out.

Hot Cross Buns are traditionally eaten either on Good Friday or Easter Sunday.
I  make  them in the week leading up to Easter and freeze them.  I take them
out of the  freezer the night before I want them so that they can defrost on
the bench.  To re-heat them, slightly wet them and then put them in the oven
at 360' for about 15 mins. This will give them a slightly crispy outside and
a warm doughy inside.  Spread with butter and enjoy
It is well worth the effort!

GOA MAROONS WIN DUBAI CHALLENGE

In the inaugural 'Friendship Through Sports' football exhibition match
organised at the Iranian Sports Stadium in Dubai on 27/3/99, Goa Maroons
(Kuwait) defeated a strong Guirim Select, 1 nil.  Goa Maroons marking the
first visit by a Indian Soccer team from Kuwait to visit the Emirates, on
the invitation of Mr. Moses Colaco who is well known for organising such
events, had to face a stiff challenge from a collection of experienced
Indian senior division players based in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.  However, they
came out tops when their mercurial and diminutive forward, Jose Rod scored
the all-important goal in the 20th minute of the second half.

The match watched by a large holiday crowd started on a furious pace and
the Guirim Selection nearly scored in the fifteenth minute but a volley by
their forward was punched away by Maroons goalkeeper Alvaro.  However the
second  half belonged to the Kuwait team with Anthony and Regi controlling
the mid-field, and defenders James and Terrence foiling all attacks by the
Dubai team.  The Guirim selection did try their best in the dying minutes
to equalise, but the Kuwait team though very tired from playing the whole
day in  Muscat the previous day, did not budge, and held on to win the game.
Besides the winners cup and individual prizes, trophies where also awarded
to midfielder Anthony Fernandes as the best player, and Jose Rod as the
most valuable player,

On their way to Dubai, Goa Maroons also participated in the 2nd Edition of
the Gulf India Challenge Cup organized by Muscat Goans under the auspices
of Oman Football Federation and open to all Indian Football teams in the
Gulf.   In all 20 teams from Oman, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and of-course Goa
Maroons the first team from Kuwait to ever visit the Sultanate,
participated.

The tournament, which was finally won by Colva of Dubai, started in the
morning at 8.00am with a parade of all 20 participating teams.  The
tournament was then declared open with the release of balloons.  The teams
were divided into 4 groups of five teams to play on a league basis and
though Goa Maroons topped their group, they were unfortunate to lose in the
Quarter Finals in a penalty shoot out to Goa Rangers, a team from Oman, in
spite of beating strong contenders Varca Dubai, Divar,  Kerala A and
drawing with Navelim and Verna in the preliminary rounds.

It must be noted that the standard of soccer displayed throught the day was
of the highest calibre and some of the teams specially Varca , Colva and
Chandor of  Dubai, Guardian Angel Club of Sanvordem, Divar, Verna and
Navelim from Oman had amidst them Indian senior division players, all of
them now earning a living in the Middle East.  Credit also goes to Mr.
Manual Rodrigues, the chief organiser who made all the arrangements for the
visiting teams.

The finals between Colva and Chandor, which the former won by a solitary
goal was watched by a huge crowd of Indians and Omanis and played at 7.00pm
under flood lights.  Goa Maroons were awarded the 'Fair Play' trophy
presented by the President of the Oman Football Federation, and Raymond
D'Sa was honoured with the 'Best Manager' award.

In all, the trip to Oman and the U.A.E with the moral support of The Kuwait
Indian Football Federation (KIFF) was a great success as the central theme
of 'Peace, Integrity and Friendship through Sports' was achieved.
Representing Goa Maroons on this tour were James Figueira (Captain), Alvaro
Dias, Terrence Carvelho, Ian D'Souza, Joseph Correa, Regi Rodrigues,
Anthony Fernandes, Roubin Fernandes, Jose Rod, Julio Cardoso, Seby D'Cunha,
Felix Mendes and Benny Fernandes.

DR. F.M.  REBELLO'S  DEATH - A TRAGIC MISFORTUNE FOR THE KONKANI LOVERS!

The news of the sudden demise of prominent Konkani lover and Konkani
protagonist, Dr. Francisco Menino Rebello of Maddel, Margao, Goa on 30.3.99
caught us unaware.

Way back in 1981 during my holidays in Goa, it was Gurunath Kelekar who
introduced me to Dr. Rebello at his hospital.  He welcomed me and showed
his appreciation for me for "igniting the spark of Konkani movement in
Kuwait".

As a great lover of Konkani, Dr. Rebello along with Stanislaus Alemao, the
then principal of New Indian School - Kuwait and Shushikar Kelekar (my
professor at St. Xavier's College - Mapusa) were the main architects of
Konkani movement during those days at St. Xavier's College - Bombay. Prof.
Kelekar and Stanislaus Alemao - unfortunately are no more with us and
History will judge that these three great Konkani souls were defying the
myth among the educated as well as others that Goa's much loved mother
tongue, Konkani, was not the language only of cooks and butlers, but of the
masses.

Among this trio Konkani lovers, Dr. Rebello was more aggressive due to his
amicable and charismatic characteristics.  When Prof. Kelekar mooted the
idea of formation of Konkani Daily in both Roman and Nagri scripts to serve
both the communities in the interest of all communities and faiths in Goa,
Dr. Rebello instantly agreed and thus Novem Goem Pratisthan (NGP) - A Trust
to start the said Konkani Daily in 2 scripts was born with the
participation  of other members namely Mrs. Sara Machado, the wife of the
then Speaker of Goa Legislative Assembly, Froiliano Machado, Adv.
Mulgaocar, Adv. Bosco Lobo, Adv. Clovis Decosta, Adv. Christopher Fonseca,
along with Prof. Kelekar and Dr. Rebello himself.

Prof. Kelekar and Dr. Rebello at this time, commenced playing major roles
in directing the course of NGP.  For a period of one month, NGP carried a
"padyatra" moving all over Goa from one village to another on foot
awakening the Goan population about the importance of Konkani and having
one people's Daily.  During this movement, Dr. Rebello himself participated
in many places, and thus NGP started collecting funds for the Konkani Daily.

It was my earlier contacts with Prof. Kelekar, who was also the then editor
of 'Goencho Mog' - a Konkani Weekly, of which I was the Kuwait
correspondent, that kept me upto on this news, and in my humble love for
Konkani, took the lead to awaken the Goans and other Konkani lovers in
Kuwait.

At this time,  many of the then Kuwait Goan stalwarts who were on forefront
to take active part in Goan affairs, were personally requested to give the
lead but to my dismay,  none bothered.  At this stage,  I took upon myself
to take this lead. (Inspite of being a newcomer in Kuwait, and still not
properly settled on the job - This created a lot of imbalances and ill will
on my future prospects too).

Alexandre Menino Fernandes of Colva and a long time resident in Kuwait,
when approached, helped me immensely and thus in Kuwait, a committee under
the banner called Novem Goem Pratisthan Kuwait Somiti was formed.  Of
course the participation of the prominent Goans was solicited and a
'fantastic' response was meted to us by the vast majority of Goans residing
in Kuwait, to raise funds for this 'just and noble' cause in the service of
our mother tongue.

For the record, it gives me pride to state that such a committee was never
formed before (outside of Goa), nor will ever be probably formed...... All
the members had unique distinctions of playing their excellent roles and
incidentally all were stalwarts in their respective professions as well as
voluntary selfless service.  Our personal contributions, as well as by
organizing Konkani Tiatr and other activities in Kuwait in addition to the
participation of Kuwait Konknni Kendr, amassed over 4 lakhs of rupees.
This amount was donated to NGP and thankfully duly acknowledged.  The need
for finances at that time were very critical, and the amount required was
one lakh Indian Rupees for the Roman Script Daily only to see the light!

As a custodian of NGP finances, Dr. Rebello had more responsibility and
since he was the man of integrity everyone had full confidence in him.
During my active participation with NGP,  I had very close encounters with
Dr. Rebello and from these,  one thing could be noticed that his love for
Konkani was supreme.  Due to this, he had to sacrifice his family life and
business interests. Having acquired such a prestigious position due to his
medical profession in which he was highly successful, he always showed love
for his mother tongue.

In our several mutual discusssions and meetings, we had to aggressively
pursue tasks of and at some times, I noticed his cool temperament and
friendly attitude.   Many times, we had to disagree on important issues
relating to Novem Goem and  he always tried to pacify me.   He even used
good offices of present Speaker of Goa Legislative Assembly Tomazinho
Cardozo to hit his point hard into my mind, at that particular meeting was
held at Tourist Hotel, Panjim.
Dr. Rebello was a sincere man, and due to this, he had to pay the heavy
price, both at a personal as well as professional level.

At one point, I had to question this great human being,  "How the hell you
failed us - the Konkani lovers - who gave lakhs of rupees to run the NGP
show, my dear Doctor_   He did not answer!  I did release from his
silence..... Alas, the show was run on the basis of non-professionalism,
allowing G. Kelekar to apply the crude methods and since none of the
trustees other than G. Kelekar had the idea of running the day to day
affairs of the Press, Novem Goem Daily had to be closed down.

Dr. Rebello tried his best even by putting more strain on his life and
health to run NGP but nothing could work and at this point,  I myself lost
my faith  in his administration of NGP.  It would be an eye opener at this
time to mention that the money that we sent and gave as donations by K.K.K.
and Konkani lovers in Kuwait were not swindled by anyone.  It is my
observation that it was a mis-handled and the mismanaged case for the
entire show.

To highlight the above, the sudden rift between G. Kelekar on one side and
the other members on the other side created lot of confusion and mistrust,
thereby forcing Dr. Rebello - a novice in running the Press to run the
affairs of Novem Goem Daily!

G. Kelekar should not have done this chicanery of withdrawing abruptly from
running the management of NGP.  By doing so he committed a breach  of trust
and put heavy pressure on Dr. Rebello who was more committed to public
trust and NGP.

I have on file the complete correspondence between me and the late
Dr.Rebello, which showed his love for NGP and Konkani.

Since things were unfavourable and out of control he had to bow down by
giving an impression to the entire Konkani lovers who supported NGP that
"you have failed us and Konkani".  In one of his beautiful and very
pathetic letters sent to me, he wrote "I am afraid that due to the shock of
running NGP I may get heart attack and die"......  Such was the pressure of
running Novem Goem Daily.

We, the Konkani 'mogi' in Kuwait did what we could do to our maximum
limitations.  The support from Kuwait was collective one for the greater
glory of Konkani, amchi maie-bhas.  We played our role in Kuwait, and Dr.
Rebello played his in Goa and it was his dedication, sacrifice and
influence that the NGP move was taken as 'the need of the hour'.

>From NGP another move was created and Konkani Porjecho Avaz (KPA) was
established culminating into the recognition of Konkani by the Government
of India and thus conferring Statehood on Goa.  I have no words to express
my grief over the sudden demise of Dr. Rebello.

When such stalwarts die, Konkani force become less and since we on Konkani
arena, are incapable of producing replacement for these giants, Konkani
cause suffers.  This is and has been the tragedy for Konkani which is on
the verge of extinction, even from the tongues of genuine Goan, be they
from any denominations - Christians, Hindus and Muslims.  He has personally
seen us physically active, tirelessly, in Kuwait during his short visit 15
years back,  at the time of our efforts in collecting funds as well as
support for NGP.

His love and sympathy for Goans, specially for myself, in particular, for
taking lead in concentizing Kuwait Goans to support the cause of Konkani
impressed him.  No doubt he is no more with us but the work that he did for
the cause of Konkani will remain immortal.

Along with my fellow Goans and Konkani lovers, I humbly to pray to the
Almighty for his soul and may He grant sollace and grace to comfort to bear
this irreparable loss for his dear family, who are equally great lovers of
Konkani.  May the soul of Dr. Rebello rest in Peace and let Goa produce
more of such Konkani lovers. Amen.

Vajpayee urges Goa to place itself on IT map
by Frederick Noronha, India Abroad News Service

Panaji, Apr 4  - Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee has asked Goa to build
itself into one of India's top ten information technology (IT) states since
it is "ideally suited" for IT development.

"I urge Goa to find a place (on this list)," he said at a function here
hosted by Goa businessmen, adding that the place was strongly suited for
software development.

He also praised the small state for its recently announced IT policy and
said New Delhi "would do everything possible to assist in the successful
implementation of this policy".

Vajpayee said Goa was "ideally suited" for software development, exports
and IT-enabled services. "You (Goa government) should also think of using
the resources of the large population of Goan NRIs (non-resident Indians)
for this purpose," he said here.

The Prime Minister was on a four-day visit to Goa in connection with the
national executive committee meeting of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Vajpayee said, "I cannot overemphasise the importance of information
technology in the decades to come. This will be the greatest area of wealth
generation in the future."

He called on Goan businessmen to "take full advantage" of the Centre's
pro-IT policies. Recently, he noted, his government had unveiled a policy
to throw open Internet services to the private sector.

"Last week we also announced a new telecom policy which will pave the way
for world-class telecom services in the country. Very soon, the National
Task Force on information technology will release its report on the
promotion of IT education, training and R&D," he said.

But amidst all the applause, the Prime Minister noted that political
stability was essential to the achievement of "rapid socio-economic
growth". He was referring to the fact that Goa was increasingly beginning
to be known as a state where chief ministers were dismissed every now and
then.--India Abroad News Service
