WRITERS GUILD - AN UNIQUE FORUM
______________________________________________________________________
Under the initiative and chairmanship of Mr. Johar Chinioty, an Indian
citizen, the Writers Guild was formed in 1995 in co-operation with
renowned Persian Poet Prof. Abdul Aziz Al Andaleeb, a high profile
Kuwaiti personality, Mr. Abdus Sattar Ghazali - Executive Producer of
Kuwait T.V. English News, D. M. Ratnanaye - a writer and Commercial
Attaché Embassy of Sri Lanka, and others.

Mr. Chinioty is a Scholar who wrote books, 3 on collection of his
poems,
one on short stories and the last on Radio Play. A widely traveled man
in search of knowledge, he enriched himself with different cultures,
traditions and histories of the World. While in U.S.A. and Canada, he
gave talks on Radio and T.V. and even conducted
symposia. Originally hailing from Chiniot in present Pakistan, he fled
to India during the partition of India.

Since the inception of this Guild till now, a total of 36 meetings have
been held - once each month. These meetings are attended by a number of
diplomats and personalities from the literary fields. At present, over
17 nationalities are represented at the Guild, namely Indian, South
African, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Philippine, Indonesian, Sri Lankan,
Malaysian, Danish, Spanish, Finland, German, Poland, Brazilian,
Nigerian, Zimbabwean and Iranian. The Writers Guild encompasses in its
fold diplomats (who are also writers and poets) from the Embassies of
Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Philippines, Indonesia, India, Malaysia,
Czechoslovakia, Turkey, Spain, Germany, Finland, Nigeria, Zimbabwe, etc.
It also accommodates in its fold prominent Kuwaiti writers and poets,
Deans of University as well as PhD holders, to their credit.

Since this is a literary forum of multi-lingual poets and writers,
during the regular meetings and sessions conducted, the members get lot
of opportunities to know and learn the cultural, traditional,
historical and many other htmlects of the countries of the members
hailing from
different parts of the World. It is a rare opportunity for the members
to acquire knowledge of such attributes of different countries through
their intellectual citizens, who as residents of Kuwait.

The popularity of the Writers Guild has spread not only all over Kuwait
as well as the Gulf region, and probably this may be the only Forum of
such magnitude that exists in this part of the World. For this unique
forum, the credit naturally go to Mr. Johar Chinioty, who is synonym
with Kuwait's Writers Guild (Email: msjohar@hotmail.com). His
charismatic approach and scholarly comments on the relevant subjects of
the discussion and enormous knowledge of the literary figures of
different eras and their works are great assets to the credibility of
the Guild.

Living a retired life after serving Government of India in New Delhi,
where Mr. Chinioty created contacts with topmost officials and
politicians including the late Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi. He spends
his leisure time with his children and grand children who are all
professionally high placed and well respected. Occasionally he shuttles
between Kuwait and USA/Canada and also Delhi in pursuit of his
knowledge. As a member of the Guild, it is a rare opportunity to learn
so many things from so many countries through so many people.

Writers Guild, as an organization of intellectuals, charges no
membership fees nor any remuneration is paid to any member for the
services it renders. The entire financial obligations are undertaken
exclusively by Mr. Chinioty; and the involvement of everyone is
voluntary for the love and propagation of literature, art, poetry,
culture, and history. At present, as the Guild is increasing and
multiplying in its activities and since more and more members are
volunteering to join the Guild, scrutiny of membership is rightly
assessed and estimated with the published/unpublished works of the
writers.

Writers Guild contemplates to publish and also translate the works of
different writers into English to promote the globalisation of
literature. In the midst of galaxy of writers, poets, intellectuals and
diplomats, this writer is the only Goan member of the Writers Guild and
at several meetings, a graphic depiction of cultural, traditional and
historical htmlects and subjects of significance of Goa has been brought
up. At a meeting at the residence of renowned Kuwaiti business magnate,
Mr. Haider Behbehani, his poetess wife Shenaz, when she learned that
this writer is a Goan in the midst of poets, writers and diplomats
gathered, showered praises on Goan community. This observation was made
in view of her personal experience by meeting and mixing up with Goans
in different parts of the world.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
On 10th October 1998, the Chairman, Mr. Johar Chinioty celebrated the
Golden Jubilee of his Wedding, a Get-Together of high profile circle of
poets, writers, top officials, diplomats and family members was held and
all wished Mr. & Mrs. Johar Chinioty "A Happy 50th Wedding Anniversary".

                      WEEKEND RECIPE - CUTLETS
_____________________________________________________________________

Ingredients:
500 grams (about a pound) minced meat, 500 grams (about a pound) potato,
one medium onion, three eggs, About 1/2 cup (125 ml) bread crumbs for
coating salt and pepper to taste (I'd suggest 1/2 tablespoon salt and
1/2 tehtmloon pepper), 2 tsp (10 ml) turmeric
1/2 tsp (2 ml) cinnamon (optional), 1/2 cup (125 ml) oil for frying.

Boil, peel, and grind the potatoes and finely chop the onion. In a large
bowl mix meat, potato, onion, eggs, salt, pepper, turmeric, and, if you
like, cinnamon. Knead the mixture for about 5 minutes. From the mixture
take a ball as big as an egg and form it to a flat oval patty about 0.5
centimeter thick (1/4 inch). Cover both sides of the patty with bread
crumbs. Heat the oil in a pan and put the patties in the hot oil. When
one side is fully fried and you can see the brown edges, turn the cutlet
so that the other side gets fried too. You may serve the cutlets with
pita bread, potato puree, green peas, and salad.
This recipe serves 4 to 6 people, at least those with Goan appetite!
Enjoy it!

             SAAR - BAHRAIN - 4000 years Revealed
____________________________________________________________________

Saar - An almost perfectly preserved city containing houses, streets, a
temple and well, untouched for four millennia. In 1989, archaeologist
Dr. Robert Killick and his wife Dr. Jane Moon formed the London-Bahrain
Archaeological Expedition. "The Dilmun Temple at Saar" - a newly
published and beautifully illustrated book co-written by Dr. Robert
Killick, Dr. Jane Moon and Dr. Harriet Crawford, gives an interesting
and unique insight into the fascinating discoveries at Saar. According
to reports, Plans are underway to include a Saar internet site and a CD
ROM. Saar lies to the right of Bahrain's approach road to the King
Fahad Causeway.

FIGHT STRESS WITH FIVE FOOD "TIPS":
----------------------------------

Whether your stress is physical or emotional, it changes the way your
body
uses and absorbs nutrients. So be sure your body is getting the
nutrients
your speeding metabolism needs. It's also important to eat foods that
will
calm you down rather than make your stress worse.

1. Start your day with a glass of orange juice and continue drinking
lots of water and juice throughout the day.

Here's why:
a) When your body is under stress, you need more vitamin C than usual. A
glass of orange juice will supply the extra you need.
b) Drinking at least eight glasses of water or juice will keep you from
getting dehydrated, an additional stress on your body.
c) Water is better for you than sugary sodas or caffeine, both of which
can aggravate stress levels.

2. Have a banana, some high-fiber cereal, and some low-fat yogurt for
breakfast.

Here's why:
a) Bananas are high in vitamin B6, which your metabolism requires when
it's running at higher speeds.
b) Your digestive system will feel the effects of stress, so getting
plenty of fiber throughout the day will help you weather the storm.
c) The yogurt contains protein, which a stressed body needs, but it
doesn't contain fat. A low-fat diet helps to bolster your immune system:
a high-fat diet may sabotage it.

3. Stick to one cup of coffee, and avoid caffeine the rest of the day.

Here's why:
- Caffeine puts your whole system under stress, speeding you up while
reducing mineral absorption. Caffeine causes anxiety. It's the last
thing you need.

4. Resist the urge to snack on sweets. Eat whole grain breads, bagels,
and pastas instead.

Here's why:
a) When your body is under stress, it produces stress hormones.
b) If you satisfy those cravings with sugar, you'll be on a sugar
roller-coaster for the rest of the day (and consuming lots of empty
calories).
c) It's far better to eat a bagel, bread, or pasta to satisfy your sugar
cravings. These whole-grain carbohydrates will stimulate your brain's
production of serotonin, a calming chemical.

5. Instead of putting away a few beers or martinis after work, go for a
walk, or play a game of basketball.

Here's why:
a) Alcohol might seem to reduce stress, but it actually puts more stress
on your body.
b) Exercise actually burns up stress chemicals in the body, along with
extra calories, making your body feel more relaxed and energetic. Not
only that, but exercise will take your mind off the things that are
stressing you out, leaving your mind calmer and clearer.

Kuwaiti MPs ask India to press Iraq for POWs release
by Mahesh Uniyal, India Abroad News Service
=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*

New Delhi, Sep 30 - Senior Kuwaiti lawmakers on a visit to India have
urged New Delhi to exercise its influence with Baghdad to secure the
release of Kuwaiti nationals in Iraqi jails.

The seven Kuwaiti MPs, led by Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly
Talal Mubarak Al-Ayyar, who also met senior External Affairs Ministry
officials, said they were assured by Indian leaders that they "fully
sympathise with the Kuwaitis in their cause."

The Kuwaiti Friendship Parliamentary Committee was in India at the
invitation of the Lok Sabha, lower house of Indian Parliament, on the
first leg of a five-nation tour which also takes it to Pakistan, the
Philippines, Malaysia and South Korea.

Besides members of Indian Parliament, they met President K.R. Narayanan,
Vice-President Krishan Kant and the chief of the main opposition
Congress party Sonia Gandhi. They could not meet Prime Minister Atal
Behari Vajpayee who was away on a foreign tour and would return after
they have left for Pakistan tomorrow.

Describing the visit as "very successful," Al-Ayyar said that India, as
a leading member of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), must "put pressure
on the Iraqi regime."

"It is a human rights issue and you (India) also believe in human
rights," he told reporters here. An estimated 6 2 5 people, including
eight women, were taken captive during the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait
eight years ago. These also include 3 5 nationals of Saudi Arabia, Iran,
Egypt, Syria, India, Lebanon, Bahrain, Oman and the Philippines.

"Our prisoners (in Iraqi jails) are equivalent to 9 0 0 , 0 0 0 Indians
being taken captive," Al-Ayyar said, pointing out that the Kuwaiti
nationals in Iraqi jails make up 0 . 1 per cent of the total Kuwaiti
population.

"We want to know if they are alive. And if they are dead, we want their
bodies back," he said. Despite Iraq's denial that there are Kuwaitis in
its jails, Kuwait has not given up hope. The MPs pointed out how Iraq
had consistently denied the presence of Iranian war prisoners in its
jails for 1 8 years, but subsequently freed thousands of Iranians taken
captive during the Iran-Iraq war.

On a mission to lobby Asian parliaments for the release of the Kuwaiti
prisoners, the MPs hit out at the Iraqi regime, praised Indians living
in Kuwait and said Kuwait was for closer ties with "friendly" India.
Kuwait's Crown Prince Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah is to visit India
later this year.

Evading comment on India's nuclear test explosions earlier this year and
its implications for the region, the Kuwaiti team said its discussions
in India were centred on topics related to India-Kuwait relations. "We
always look forward to peace, stability and development in the region,"
Al-Ayyar said.

Indian External Affairs Ministry officials told the Kuwaitis of the
recent meeting between the Indian and Pakistani Prime Ministers in New
York and Vajpayee's statement before the world body on India's nuclear
stand. "We welcome the movement in this direction," Al-Ayyar said.

The other members of the Kuwaiti team are: Hadi Hayef Al-Huerilah Al
Ajmi, Controller of Parliament; Abbas Hussain Sh. Al-Khodari, Chairman
of the Health, Social and Labour Affairs Committee; Ali Abdullah
Al-Khalaf, Chairman of Agricultural Affairs Committee; Rashid Salman
Al-Habidah, member of the Interior, Defence and Agricultural Affairs
Committee; Saud Irshad Al-Gufedi, member of the Interior, Defence and
Human Rights Affairs Committee and Salah Abdullreda Khourshid, member of
the Finance and Commerce Committee.--India Abroad News Service

Gulf War Claims
===============

The Indian claims are being followed up by the following office:

Special Kuwait Cell,
Ministry of External Affairs,
ISIL Building,
9 Bhagwan Dass Road,
New Delhi- 110002

Although this is the office that is responsible for the liasoning
between the UNCC and the Indian nationals for the Indian claims, I have
heard of a lot of complains from my friends about them not getting any
replies to their queries from this office, maybe because they are tied
up with a lot of issues just like us here and have inadequate resources
to answer to all queries.

To brief up the status of the claims, here r some points that should be
noted:

1.The deadlines for submitting of all claims is over. No claims will be
accepted by the UNCC unless it comes under the UNCC Decision 12 wherein
only claims for Injuries or death will be accepted within 1 year from
the occurrance of the Injury/Death- Because of the Mines etc. left
behind after the war.

2. The UNCC is at the moment reviewing the claims and recommending
awards for thes claims. All "A" claims for Departure and Partial "C"
claims for losses upto $100,000 have been resolved. The recommendations
have been made in batches(Installments).Until now there have been 6
Installments of recommendations for the "A" and "C" claims. This means
that all the claimants claiming in the "A" and "C" Category will be
getting their initial payments($2500){if both than $2500+$2500} in
sequential order of the Installments as and when the UNCC is able to
draw up the money from Iraqi Oil sales. Uptill date the UNCC has
transferred money for the 1,2,3 Installments of "A" and "C" claims. The
4th Installment too will be paid in the next few weeks.

Please note that the below are my findings/Assumptions for the Indian
claims.

3. All claimants were sent notification postcards when their claims were
submitted to the UNCC or on receipt by the Special Kuwait Cell(SKC).
Those that did not recieve any such notification should write to the
Kuwait Cell and inquire. Most probably the claims were not recieved by
the SKC and hence were not submitted. And now it is too late to submit
any claim.

4. For those that were submitted and have their notification stating
that the claims were recieved by the SKC and sent to the UNCC should be
getting new notifications asking them to open accounts in the banks that
have been designated for the compensation amount disposal. These
notifications are most probably sent out only after the SKC has has
recieved the reccommendations from the UNCC for an Installment. I think
the SKC has been giving the Instalment number in these notifications.
Once the bank account has been opened the money will be transferred
according to the payments made by UNCC(See above). I think all those
appearing in Installments 1 and 2 should have recieved their money by
now. As for those in Installment 3 please have patience because of the
enormity of the claimants that are being paid and all the verifications
that have to be done.
